Who
What

Tigo aimed to bridge the credit gap for unbanked and underbanked communities in Tanzania but faced challenges with traditional lending models that required extensive paperwork, had long approval cycles, and excluded users without formal credit histories. The lack of a seamless, data-driven lending mechanism limited accessibility and financial participation.

How

Tigo partnered with Torry Harris to launch Nivushe, an API-driven nano-lending platform offering instant microloans via mobile money, real-time credit scoring, and automated processing. Torry Harris modernized Tigo’s IT architecture, boosting scalability and resilience while migrating legacy systems. The omnichannel solution - via USSD, mobile apps, and web - expanded financial access across Tigo’s network.

Results:
  • Offered credit services for the first time to 54% of Tanzania’s financially challenged population, and providing them with income opportunities
  • Increase in customer base from 10 million to 15 million subscribers
  • 10% revenue increase from transactions on the Tigo Nivushe platform
  • The new platform was accessed by 1 million customers in the first year to enable over $3 million in loans
  • 12% YOY growth in Tigo Pesa transactions, averaging 12 million transactions per day and peaking at 15 million during weekends
  • Automation and cloud infrastructure lowered administrative costs by 25% and IT maintenance costs by 15%
